Discover Carson

For thousands of years before Europeans arrived, the Tongva lived in the area. Carson lies on part of Rancho San Pedro, a Spanish land grant made by the King of Spain in 1784. The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum on Alameda Street, near the city limits, is the historic ranch home of the grantees, Juan and Manuel Dominguez. The city is named for George Henry Carson, who married a daughter of the Dominguez family in 1857 and managed the rancho. Dominguez Hill, on the rancho's northwest side, was the site of the Battle of Rancho Dominguez in 1846, during the Mexican-American War.

More about Carson

Oil drilling began at Dominguez Hill in 1921. The mineral rights there belonged to the Carson Estate Company, the Hellman family, the Dominguez Estate Company and Frederick Russell Burnham's Burnham Exploration Company, and on September 7, 1923, Burnham Exploration and Union Oil brought in the first producing well, Callender No. 1-A, at a depth of 4,068 feet, yielding 1,193 barrels a day. Carson was incorporated as a city on February 20, 1968. It lies in the South Bay and Harbor area of Los Angeles County, about 13 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, and is known for its large Filipino American community. In 2011 state regulators ordered Shell to clean up benzene and methane contamination in the city's Carousel Tract neighborhood. Sources Wikipedia: Carson, California
