Discover Malibu

Malibu lies in the territory of the Ventureno Chumash, who called their settlement there Humaliwo, "the surf sounds loudly," from which the city's name derives. Humaliwo, beside Malibu Lagoon and now part of the state park, was occupied from about 2500 BCE and was the second-largest Chumash coastal settlement along the Santa Monica Mountains, after Muwu at Point Mugu. It was an important political center with ties to villages such as Hipuk in Westlake Village and Lalimanux near the Conejo Grade, and smaller villages, among them Ta'lopop up Malibu Canyon, lay nearby. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo is believed to have stopped at Malibu Lagoon for fresh water in 1542, and mission baptismal records list 118 people from Humaliwo.

More about Malibu

In 1802 the area became part of Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit, a 13,000-acre land grant, which passed intact to Frederick Hastings Rindge in 1891. He and his wife, Rhoda May Knight Rindge, guarded their land closely. To block a Southern Pacific line through the ranch, Rindge, relying on federal rules that barred a railroad from condemning land to build tracks paralleling an existing line, began his own railroad, and after his death May built the Hueneme, Malibu and Port Los Angeles Railway, running 15 miles west from Carbon Canyon past Point Dume. She hired guards to turn away trespassers and fought long court battles, but in 1929 the state won its case and built what is now the Pacific Coast Highway, and she was forced to divide her property and begin selling and leasing lots.
