Discover San Gabriel

Before the Spanish arrived, the San Gabriel area was home to the Tongva, whom the Spanish called Gabrielenos. The Tongva village of Shevaanga stood at the mission's original site, and after a flood the mission moved to the site of another village, Toviscanga, part of a wide network of villages linked by trade trails. Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1771, was the fourth of California's twenty-one missions and is known as the "Pride of the California Missions." The Tongva were forced to labor there, and resistance was common. After the missionaries banned converts from dancing and taking part in ceremonies, eight villages rose in a major rebellion in 1785 led by Toypurina and Nicolas Jose.

More about San Gabriel

The mission was central to Californio society, and many of the region's first Mexican settlers were baptized there, among them Pio Pico, born at the mission in 1801. Pico served briefly as governor in 1832 and again from 1845 through the Mexican-American War, the last governor of California born under Mexican rule, and later sat on the Los Angeles city council. The city of Pico Rivera is named for him. Sources Wikipedia: San Gabriel, California
