Discover Encino

Encino is a neighborhood of Los Angeles in the southern San Fernando Valley, on the north slope of the Santa Monica Mountains between Sherman Oaks and Tarzana. Its name is a masculine misspelling of encina, Spanish for the holm oak, and reflects the Tongva name of the village of Siutcanga, "the place of the oaks."

More about Encino

On August 5, 1769, the Portola expedition, the first Europeans to see inland California, traveled north through the Sepulveda Pass into the valley and spent two nights at Siutcanga, near today's Los Encinos State Historic Park. The Franciscan Juan Crespi named the valley El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bolonia de Los Encinos, the Valley of St. Catherine of Bologna of the Oaks, and all but "Encino" was later dropped. After the secularization of the missions began in 1834, many ranchos were created, and in 1845 Governor Pio Pico granted a large parcel of former Mission San Fernando land to three Mission Indians as Rancho Los Encinos, the Ranch of the Holm Oaks, from which the neighborhood takes its name.
