Discover Gardena

Archaeological finds show that the Tongva hunted and fished in the Gardena area. In 1784, three years after Los Angeles was founded, Juan Jose Dominguez, a Spanish soldier who had come to San Diego in 1769, received the Rancho San Pedro land grant for his military service; this article gives its size as about 43,000 acres, while others give more than 75,000 for the original grant. Part of it became known as the Gardena Valley. After the Civil War, veterans and then ranchers and farmers bought parts of the land, and in 1869 the Union general William Starke Rosecrans bought 16,000 acres, bounded by today's Florence Avenue, Redondo Beach Boulevard, Central Avenue and Arlington Avenue, which was subdivided and sold in the early 1870s.

More about Gardena

Gardena proper began in 1887, when the developers Pomeroy and Harrison subdivided the 650-acre Amestoy Ranch in anticipation of the Los Angeles and Redondo Railway, and the Civil War veteran Spencer Roane Thorpe is credited with starting the first settlement that year. Some believe the town was named for being the only green spot between Los Angeles and the sea in the dry season. Its many acres of berries earned it the nickname Berryland and an annual Strawberry Day Festival, though the berry industry suffered during World War I. Japanese Americans settled in Gardena throughout its history, and many moved into its new tract homes as the suburb grew. The city incorporated on September 11, 1930, as the only way to avoid a heavy county tax planned for a park project, and from 1936 to 1980 it held a local monopoly on legal cardrooms, whose taxes made up nearly a third of its budget.
