Discover Los Angeles

The Tongva lived in the Los Angeles Basin. Their village of Yaanga stood near where the Spanish later founded the pueblo. Gaspar de Portola and the Franciscan Juan Crespi reached the site on August 2, 1769. Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was built in 1771, and on September 4, 1781, 44 settlers known as Los Pobladores founded El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles. About two-thirds of them were of mixed African, Indigenous and European ancestry. The old pueblo survives as the Los Angeles Plaza and Olvera Street.

More about Los Angeles

Under Mexican rule, after 1821, Governor Pio Pico made Los Angeles the regional capital of Alta California. American forces occupied it in 1846, during the Mexican-American War. Californio militia drove them out in the Siege of Los Angeles, but the Treaty of Cahuenga, signed on January 13, 1847, ended the fighting, and the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded California to the United States. The Southern Pacific arrived in 1876 and the Santa Fe in 1885. Oil was found in 1892. By 1900 the city had more than 102,000 people, and in 1913 William Mulholland finished the Los Angeles Aqueduct. Because the city would not sell aqueduct water outside its borders, many neighboring communities chose to join it. On September 14, 1908, the city adopted the first municipal zoning ordinance in the United States. Hollywood merged into Los Angeles in 1910, and by 1921 more than 80 percent of the world's film industry was there. The city passed one million people by 1930, hosted the 1932 Summer Olympics, and in World War II built ships and aircraft. Sources Wikipedia: Los Angeles
