Discover Palmdale

People lived in the Antelope Valley for an estimated 11,000 years, and it was a trade route between present Arizona and New Mexico and the California coast. Before Europeans arrived, the Kitanemuk occupied the Palmdale area. The Spanish captain Pedro Fages explored the valley in 1772, and Father Francisco Garces, guided by Native people from Mission San Gabriel, crossed it in 1776. Spanish and Mexican settlers later ran large cattle ranches there, and in the late 1880s the ranches were broken into homesteads farmed by settlers from Germany, France and Nebraska.

More about Palmdale

The first permanent settlement, Palmenthal, was founded on April 20, 1886, by Lutheran travelers from the Midwest, mostly of German and Swiss descent. According to local folklore, they had been told they would know they were near the ocean when they saw palm trees, and they mistook the Joshua trees for palms. The historian David L. Durham notes that Joshua trees were then sometimes called yucca palms. Palmenthal is German for "palm valley," and the village was officially established when its post office opened on June 17, 1888. Farm families kept coming in the 1890s to grow grain and fruit, after the last of the valley's antelope had been hunted out. Most did not know how to farm in the desert, and when drought came most of them left. By 1899 only one family remained in the original village. The others moved with the post office closer to the Southern Pacific tracks, and the new community, renamed Palmdale, grew where the civic center now stands. Sources Wikipedia: Palmdale, California
