Before the Spanish arrived, the area was home to the Kizh, or Tongva, whom the Spanish called Gabrielenos. In 1771 the Spanish founded the first Mission San Gabriel Arcangel near the village of Shevaangna, at what is now called La Mision Vieja in the Whittier Narrows on the border of Montebello and Rosemead, and in 1775 the mission moved to its present site in San Gabriel to escape the spring floods that had ruined its first crops. The land of present Rosemead was administered by the mission until Mexico's secularization act of 1833 distributed mission lands to private citizens.
Most of Rosemead was part of Rancho Potrero Grande, "large pasture," granted in 1845 to Manuel Antonio Perez, a Native mayordomo at the mission, and later transferred to Juan Matias Sanchez of Taos, New Mexico. In 1852 John and Harriet Guess came by ox wagon from Conway County, Arkansas, and in 1855 they camped where Savannah Elementary School now stands; courts ruled in 1867 that they had been squatting on Sanchez's land, and John Guess later bought 100 acres and named his ranch Savannah. Other pioneers included Frank Forst and Leonard John Rose, who with his wife, Amanda, bought about 600 acres between today's Rosemead Boulevard and Walnut Grove Avenue, where he bred and trained horses. He called the ranch Rose's Meadow, later shortened to Rosemeade and then Rosemead, which gave the city its name. The pastoral community of truck farms and rabbit and chicken farms voted to incorporate on August 4, 1959. Sources Wikipedia: Rosemead, California
