The Tongva were the first people to live in the Compton area. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo explored the Pacific coast for Spain in 1542 and 1543, the area became part of the Province of the Californias in 1767, and the Portola expedition passed through in 1769 and 1770. In 1784 the Spanish Crown deeded Rancho San Pedro, more than 75,000 acres, to the soldier Juan Jose Dominguez. His descendants divided the land, sold parcels to settlers and gave up some in confirming their claim, to 48,000 acres with the Mexican government in 1828 and to 43,119 acres with a U.S. patent in 1858. The tree that marked the rancho's original northern boundary still stands at Poppy and Short streets.
In 1867 Griffith Dickenson Compton led 30 pioneers south by wagon train from Stockton, looking for a living other than the fast-exhausted gold fields. The settlement was first named Gibsonville, after one of the tract owners, then Comptonville, which was shortened to Compton to avoid confusion with Camptonville in Yuba County. The early settlers farmed for bare subsistence in cold, rainy weather, and gathering firewood meant a nearly weeklong round trip to the mountains near Pasadena. Many wanted to move on, but with general stores within reach in Los Angeles and Wilmington, they stayed. By 1887 the settlers began holding town meetings about incorporation. Compton donated land for the city, stipulating that a tract be kept for agriculture as Richland Farms. A petition went to the county supervisors in January 1888, and the city was incorporated on May 11, 1888, holding its first council meeting on May 14. Sources Wikipedia: Compton, California
