Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was first founded on September 8, 1771, near Tongva settlements in the Whittier Narrows, on a bluff above the Rio Hondo, before floods forced it to move to San Gabriel five years later. In 1784 Governor Pedro Fages granted the former soldier Manuel Nieto the largest land concession in Alta California, about 300,000 acres stretching from the Santa Ana River to the old San Gabriel River and from the mission road to the ocean, later reduced at the mission's insistence. Spanish concessions like this worked more like grazing permits, with title remaining with the crown.

More about Downey

Rancho Los Nietos passed to Nieto's four children and stayed intact until 1833, when his heirs asked Governor Jose Figueroa to divide it. The northwestern part, covering the Downey-Norwalk area, became the 21,000-acre Rancho Santa Gertrudes, granted to Josefa Cota, widow of Nieto's son Antonio, and its old Nieto homestead was a center of social life east of Los Angeles. Downey was founded by and named for John Gately Downey, an Irish-born former governor, the youngest in California's history, a Democrat who supported Lincoln's effort to preserve the Union. Around 1865 he pioneered the modern subdivision on land between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River, and he imported several varieties of oranges, helping make them one of the state's biggest crops. Many settlers came from Ireland. The small settlements of College Settlement and Gallatin grew along the Rio Hondo, where residents built the Little Red Gallatin School House in the late 1860s, and dairying became a major industry.
