Discover Alhambra

Mission San Gabriel was founded nearby on September 8, 1771, as part of the Spanish colonization of Alta California, and the land that later became Alhambra was part of a huge 300,000-acre grant to a soldier of the Los Angeles presidio. After Mexican independence the land became part of Mexico, and after the Mexican-American War part of the United States.

More about Alhambra

The wealthy developer Benjamin Davis Wilson bought the land that became Alhambra from his ward, Victoria Reid. At the urging of his daughter, Ruth, he named the development after the book she was reading, Washington Irving's Tales of the Alhambra, which Irving wrote after a long stay at the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain. Alhambra began as an unincorporated suburb of Los Angeles. Its first school was the Ramona Convent Secondary School, founded in 1890 by prominent San Gabriel Valley families who wanted a Catholic education for their daughters, on hillside land given by the James de Barth Shorb family. Alhambra High School, the first public high school, opened in 1898. The City of Alhambra was incorporated on July 11, 1903, and its fire department was established in 1906.
