In 1841 William and Nicolasa Workman, who had come west with John Rowland and others, received the land grant of Rancho La Puente from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado, and the ranch grew to almost 49,000 acres; other sources date the grant to 1842 or 1845. The Workmans became prosperous cattle ranchers, supplying beef to the gold fields during the Gold Rush. After their son found oil on family land in the Montebello hills, the Workmans' grandson Walter P. Temple and his wife, Laura, bought the Workman House and surrounding land in 1917, now the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum, a free public heritage site in the city.

More about City Of Industry

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads were built through the San Jose Creek valley, and the Union Pacific set up a major railyard at the Marne siding. Together with Valley Boulevard, a main artery east from Los Angeles, the railroads drew the warehouses that became the core of the local economy. The City of Industry was incorporated as a charter city on June 18, 1957, after voters approved incorporation by 118 to 28 the previous December. Its general plan, prepared in 1971 by the firm of the architect Victor Gruen, remained in effect in amended form half a century later. Sources Wikipedia: City of Industry, California
