Discover La Puente

The original inhabitants of the La Puente area were the Tongva, who lived in a village called Awingna, "abiding place." Its chief, Matheo, who also led several nearby villages, was baptized at Mission San Gabriel in 1774. On July 30, 1769, the Portola expedition, the first Europeans to see inland Alta California, camped on the east side of the San Gabriel River in today's Bassett, and Father Juan Crespi wrote that the next day they had to build a bridge, a puente, to cross the miry river.

More about La Puente

After Mission San Gabriel was founded, the land around Awingna became Rancho La Puente, a mission outpost and ranch. The Jedediah Smith party, the first Americans to travel overland to California, visited the rancho in November 1826. After the missions were secularized in the 1830s, John Rowland and William Workman received the 48,000-acre Rancho La Puente. Sources differ on the date of the grant, which the La Puente article gives as 1842 and the El Monte article as 1845. The area was named Puente in 1884, and Crespi's old feminine spelling, la puente, has persisted. In the 1930s the area was known for its fruit and walnut groves and was home to the world's largest walnut packing plant. A small airport called the Skyranch operated from 1944 to 1951 before it was closed and developed for housing. Sources Wikipedia: La Puente, California Wikipedia: El Monte, California
