Canoga Park, CA news and local guide

In 1863 the San Fernando Homestead Association, led by Isaac Lankershim and Isaac Van Nuys, bought the southern half of the valley and set up seven wheat ranches, the first to ship California wheat to Europe. In 1869 the westernmost ranch, 13,000 acres, went to the Workman family, and Albert Workman planted eucalyptus seedlings from his native Australia that spread across the area. With the Los Angeles Aqueduct nearing completion, investors including Harry Chandler, Harrison Gray Otis, Moses Sherman and Hobart Johnstone Whitley subdivided the south valley. Whitley's company named the new town Owensmouth, as the new mouth of the Owens River, and founded it on March 30, 1912, with Pacific Electric streetcars and Sherman Way reaching it from Hollywood. Lacking its own water supply, Owensmouth joined Los Angeles on February 26, 1917. It was renamed Canoga Park in 1931 through the efforts of the civic leader Mary Logan Orcutt.
