Discover Lancaster

The Paiute lived in the Antelope Valley when Europeans arrived, and the valley was a hub of trade between the California coast, the Central Valley, the Great Basin and the pueblos of Arizona. In the 1850s the Stockton-Los Angeles Road and the Butterfield Overland Mail crossed it, with stops at Mud Spring and Neenach. Lancaster itself began with the Southern Pacific Railroad, which built a station, water stop, section housing and track at today's town center and finished its line through the valley in 1876, linking San Francisco and Los Angeles.

More about Lancaster

Lancaster began as a Scottish settlement. The origin of its name is unclear. It is attributed to a railroad clerk's surname, to railroad officials, or to settlers from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Moses Langley Wicks, credited with formally developing the town, bought land from the railroad in 1884 for $2.50 an acre, laid out streets and lots, and by September was advertising 160-acre tracts for $6 an acre. The Lancaster News, the valley's first weekly paper, began the next year. With good rains, farmers planted thousands of acres of wheat and barley, and by 1890 the town was booming. A drought that began in 1894 and lasted a decade ruined businesses and drove cattle north, though discoveries of gold and borax nearby helped in the late 1890s. The Tropico Gold Mine in Rosamond was for a time the largest gold mine in Southern California, and the Pacific Coast Borax Company mine later became the world's largest.
