North Hollywood, now a neighborhood of Los Angeles, was once part of the lands of Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana, taken over by the government under Mexican rule. The San Fernando Farm Homestead Association bought the southern half of the Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando. Its leading investor, Isaac Lankershim, a Northern California stockman and grain farmer, planned to raise sheep on the valley's wild oats. In 1873 his son, James Boon Lankershim, and future son-in-law, Isaac Newton Van Nuys, took over the property. Van Nuys tested dryland wheat farming of the kind used on the Great Plains, and the Lankershim holdings, as the Los Angeles Farming and Milling Company, became the world's largest wheat-growing empire.
In October 1887 J.B. Lankershim and eight other developers formed the Lankershim Ranch Land and Water Company and bought 12,000 acres north of Cahuenga Pass. They laid out a townsite that residents named Toluca, and on April 1, 1888, they offered small farms already planted with peaches, pears, apricots and walnuts, deep-rooted trees that could live through the dry summers on the high water table of the Tujunga Wash. The land boom collapsed in the 1890s, but the fruit growers survived, and the Toluca Fruit Growers Association formed in 1894. When the Southern Pacific opened a branch line in 1895, its depot was named Lankershim while the post office across the street was Toluca, and ranchers joked, "Ship the merchandise to Lankershim, but bill it to Toluca." In 1896 the post office was renamed Lankershim, a name officially recognized in 1905. By 1903 the area was known as the Home of the Peach. Sources Wikipedia: North Hollywood, Los Angeles
