Gulf Shores is one of Alabama's youngest towns. Until the 1940s the land between Little Lagoon and the Gulf of Mexico was mostly beach and wetland, hard to reach from the mainland. That changed with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, completed through the area in 1937, which cut a channel across southern Baldwin County and opened the coast to tourism and construction. The first hotel on the beach was built in the early 1940s, reached by a primitive road, and the first post office opened in 1947.
More about Gulf Shores
Becoming a city took a court fight. Residents petitioned for incorporation in 1956 and were granted a charter, but in 1957 a local judge overturned it after opponents challenged it over possible tax increases. In 1958 the Alabama Supreme Court ruled in favor of incorporation. The 1960 census counted 356 residents.
The beach has made Gulf Shores a major vacation destination, with Gulf State Park covering a large eastern part of the city, but its exposed position has brought hard blows. In September 1979 Hurricane Frederic leveled most of the town, and on September 16, 2004, Hurricane Ivan made landfall at Gulf Shores, causing heavy wind and flood damage. Beach tourism remains the town's main draw.
