Robertsdale was laid out by a Chicago land company along a new railroad. The pine land of central Baldwin County had been worked for turpentine since 1860, when Robert Baker and Stephen Potts bought 12,000 acres that would later include Robertsdale and its neighbors. In 1904 the Louisville and Nashville Railroad extended a spur south from Bay Minette, and in 1905 the Southern Plantation Development Company of Chicago founded the town beside the tracks. It was named for Dr. B. F. Roberts, an officer of the company. A post office was established the same year.
Roberts persuaded William Andrew Hammond, a native of Ontario, Canada, to open a store, which became Hammond's Grocery, one of the town's best-known landmarks, later run by his son Walter "Pop" Hammond. Hammond helped bring the town its first post office and served as postmaster for 20 years. Families of many nationalities came to clear the timberland for farms, and agriculture and timber drove the early economy. Robertsdale was incorporated in February 1921, with Hammond as its first mayor. Robertsdale remained a farm town at heart. The Robertsdale Livestock Auction served Baldwin County for more than six decades until it closed in 2014, and the Baldwin County Fair, held here every fall, marked its 70th year in 2021, the same year the city celebrated the centennial of its incorporation.
