Loxley began as a lumber camp. The first settlement here was a village called Bennet (the spelling varies), and around 1900 it took the name of John Loxley, a Michigan native who set up a camp in the pine forests of southern Alabama with a sawmill and a small-gauge railroad to haul timber. When the local timber ran out, Loxley and his family moved on, possibly to Louisiana, but his name stayed.
In 1906 the Louisville and Nashville Railroad built a line through Loxley; it was planned to run all the way to Fort Morgan but was never finished. A hurricane that year blew down pine groves along the route, and the L&N switched to wood-burning engines to use the free fuel. High school students rode the "Pine Knot Special" to Bay Minette, and it stopped every few miles so passengers could gather pine knots for the engine. The town's first schoolhouse went up in 1908, followed by a three-room school in 1911, and by 1920 Loxley had businesses including an egg shop and a cement block plant. During World War II a prisoner-of-war camp here held German, and sometimes Italian, soldiers who worked in nearby sawmills. A 1965 fire destroyed the old depot and its storage sheds, ending Loxley's railroad era. The town had been incorporated in 1957, and farming, including large cotton fields, continues around it.
