Spanish Fort is named for a fort built on the bluffs across the bay from Mobile during the American Revolution. In March 1780 Spanish forces under Bernardo de Gálvez, the governor of Spanish Louisiana, captured the British post of Fort Charlotte at Mobile, and Spain then built a blockhouse armed with two cannon on the eastern shore. In January 1781 British regulars, provincial troops and Native allies, backed by British warships, attacked it; according to one account, about 150 Spanish troops held the fort through a day-long battle.
The bluffs saw a bigger fight at the end of the Civil War. On March 27, 1865, Union Major General Edward R. S. Canby, with about 30,000 troops, laid siege to the Confederate earthworks at Spanish Fort, held by some 2,000 men under Brigadier General Randall L. Gibson. By April 1 the fort was surrounded, and after a heavy bombardment on April 8 the Confederates abandoned it that night, most escaping to Mobile. Union losses were 657 and Confederate losses 744. Fort Blakeley, just to the north, fell the next day, April 9, and Union troops occupied Mobile on April 12, 1865. The town that grew up on the old battleground took the fort's name, and the City of Spanish Fort was incorporated on July 19, 1993.
