Discover Fairfield

Fairfield was planned as a model city by the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company to house workers at its new Fairfield Works, now owned by U.S. Steel. Founded in 1910, with former President Theodore Roosevelt as the featured speaker at its dedication, it was first named Corey, after the president of U.S. Steel. After Corey left the company amid scandal, the town was renamed for Fairfield, Connecticut, the hometown of his successor. Fairfield was incorporated on January 1, 1919.

More about Fairfield

The Colored Methodist Episcopal Church founded Miles College in Fairfield in 1898. In the 1960s its president, Lucius Pitts, encouraged students and faculty to join the civil rights movement. When students in early 1962 wanted to boycott downtown Birmingham stores over segregated lunch counters and the lack of Black clerks, Pitts arranged meetings with merchants, and in early 1963 student government president Frank Dukes led a "selective buying campaign" against department stores, since a city ordinance banned boycotts. That year Miles students joined the Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth in inviting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to take part in the Birmingham demonstrations. In May 2020 the city of Fairfield entered bankruptcy.
