Clay, in northeastern Jefferson County, took its name in 1878, when a post office opened, from the clay soil first farmed by the Creeks. Its roots go back to the early 1800s and two small communities, Ayres and Self's Beat. Mount Calvary Presbyterian Church, founded by Scots-American settlers around 1806, is the oldest church in Jefferson County and has met continually since, and Cedar Mountain Church, now Clay United Methodist, followed in 1819. In its early years Clay was a stagecoach stop on the route from Elyton, now part of Birmingham, to Gadsden.
Clay lies in the Appalachian foothills where three river basins meet, the Black Warrior, the Cahaba and the Coosa, and the Cahaba, Alabama's longest free-flowing river, rises from springs just northeast of town. Butler Mountain, the highest point in Jefferson County, is within the city. A census-designated place before then, Clay was incorporated on June 6, 2000, and includes Chalkville, home of Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church, founded in 1819. On January 23, 2012, an EF3 tornado damaged or destroyed 231 homes and businesses in the area and killed a 16-year-old student.
