Discover Leeds

Leeds, east of Birmingham on the Little Cahaba River, grew at the crossroads of old Native American paths and drew European, Cherokee and African American settlers. The settlement dates to about 1818. James Hamilton, a War of 1812 veteran and the first sheriff of Shelby County, settled at Cedar Grove, and John Richard Ingram Pashal Stewart, a Cherokee English teacher and War of 1812 veteran, settled at Ohanafeefee Village about 1840. At Oak Ridge in 1820 or 1821, settlers formed Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the first congregation of its denomination in middle Alabama. Named for Leeds in England, the town was incorporated on April 27, 1887.

More about Leeds

By then the railroad pioneers included free African American settlers who came to work at the Leeds cement plant and on the Central of Georgia and Georgia Pacific railroads. In 1921 Black residents founded the Leeds Negro School, later Robert Russa Moton High School. Leeds is also linked to the legend of John Henry, the "steel-driving man" who raced a steam drill while blasting railroad tunnels; folklore researcher John Garst found evidence that the contest took place near Dunnavant, at the Big Oak or Coosa Tunnel, on September 20, 1887, though other states also claim John Henry. Leeds calls itself "The City of Valor" for three Medal of Honor recipients from World War II and Korea who called it home: Alford McLaughlin, William Lawley and Henry "Red" Erwin.
