The Sinagua occupied much of Arizona from about 500 to 1425 CE, and the Northern Sinagua moved into the Flagstaff area about 700 CE. The eruptions of Sunset Crater in 1064 and 1066 covered the land in ash that enriched the soil, and Ancestral Puebloan and Cohonina people also moved to the nearby Wupatki site. The Sinagua left by the early 15th century, probably moving north to become part of the Hopi, for whom the San Francisco Peaks above Flagstaff are sacred. Until the 1860s the Northeastern Yavapai held land up to the peaks, overlapping with the Northern Tonto Apache, whose Mormon Lake band, centered on the Flagstaff area, lived by hunting and gathering around Mount Elden, Lake Mary and the foot of the peaks.
More about Flagstaff
In the 1800s Edward Fitzgerald Beale's men built a wagon road to California through the area. Edward Whipple opened a saloon on the road in 1871, the first non-Native settlement, and in 1876 Thomas F. McMillan built a cabin just north of today's town center, the first permanent settlement. Flagstaff grew in the 1880s, and by 1886 it was the largest city on the railroad between Albuquerque and the West Coast. In 1888 McMillan opened the Bank Hotel at today's Leroux Street and Route 66. Coconino County was created in 1891 with Flagstaff as its seat over Williams.
In 1894, on A.E. Douglass's recommendation, Percival Lowell built Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill, and Flagstaff was incorporated as a town that year. In the 1890s the Riordan brothers founded the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company.
