Discover Victorville

The Serrano were the first known inhabitants of the area. In 1858 Aaron G. Lane, a Mexican War veteran who had come west for the Gold Rush and found he did better selling supplies to miners, founded a waystation called Lane's Crossing on the Mojave River, two miles north of today's Interstate 15 crossing, to shelter travelers crossing the desert to San Bernardino. He later sold it to the Texan John Fry Miller, who renamed it Pioneer Station and set up the area's first polling place. The 1860 census counted ten people in two dwellings on the river, including the Mormon pioneer families of Levick, Nicholson and Highmoor, who later set up their own waystations at Highmoor's Crossing near Oro Grande and at Point of Rocks near Helendale.

More about Victorville

In 1867 Lafayette Meacham, a Mormon who ran a stage stop near Barstow, opened a wagon road, now Stoddard Wells Road, to what is now Old Town Victorville, crossing the river at today's Sixth Street at a place called Mormon Crossing. In the 1870s Heber "Pete" Huntington, a nephew of Brigham Young, set up Huntington Station there and bought out nearby waystations. In 1885 a telegraph station was set up at the California Southern Railroad siding of Victor, named for the railroad's general manager, Jacob Nash Victor, and the village that grew there took the name. In 1901, at the suggestion of the postmistress Abbey Turner, the Post Office renamed it Victorville to avoid confusion with Victor, Colorado. U.S. 66 came through on D and Seventh streets in 1926, and in 1940 Herman J. Mankiewicz and John Houseman wrote the first drafts of Citizen Kane in seclusion at a ranch near town.
