The Tongva village of Wa'aachnga, called Rancheria Guachama by the Spanish, stood at what is now Loma Linda. It became an outpost of Mission San Gabriel in the early 1800s and was later occupied by the Cahuilla and Serrano. In the late 1800s, encouraged by the railroads, developers tried to build a tourist resort there called Mound City, with shops and cottages, but the project failed. In the late 1890s a group of Los Angeles businessmen and physicians bought the Mound City Hotel and reopened it as a convalescent home and health resort called Loma Linda, Spanish for "beautiful hill."
In 1905 the Seventh-day Adventists John Burden and Ellen G. White bought the Loma Linda Hotel and its grounds and reopened them as the Loma Linda Sanitarium, and in February 1906 the Loma Linda College of Evangelists, now Loma Linda University, was founded. In 1969 San Timoteo Creek overflowed and flooded two-thirds of the town, washing away many bridges and completely flooding Loma Linda Academy, and the creek flooded parts of the city again in 2010. Loma Linda was incorporated as a city in 1970. Sources Wikipedia: Loma Linda, California
