Discover Redlands

The Redlands area was historically Cahuilla territory, and in the 1770s explorers such as Pedro Fages and Francisco Garces sought to extend Spanish rule and Catholic influence there. Father Francisco Dumetz reached the Tongva village of Kaawchama, just west of present Redlands, on May 20, 1810, the feast of St. Bernardino of Siena, and named the San Bernardino Valley. Franciscans from Mission San Gabriel founded the San Bernardino Estancia in 1819, and by 1820 conscripted Native laborers had dug a ditch, or zanja, from Mill Creek to the estancia. The land passed to Mexico after independence in 1822.

More about Redlands

In 1842 the Lugo family bought the Rancho San Bernardino land grant, the first permanent settlement in the area, and the northwest part of Redlands along the Santa Ana River was founded as Lugonia. After the area became American, several hundred Mormon pioneers bought the whole rancho, founded San Bernardino and farmed the valley until Brigham Young recalled them to Utah in 1857 amid the tensions that led to the Utah War. Benjamin Barton bought 1,000 acres from them and planted vineyards and a winery, and settlers such as Barry Roberts and the Craw and Glover families came to Lugonia from 1869. Redlands Colony, named for the color of its adobe soil, was founded with E. G. Judson among its leaders, and by 1888 the area had grown so much that Lugonia, Bryn Mawr, Barton, Terracina, Victoria, Gladysta and parts of Mentone and Crafton were joined with the colony and incorporated as one city on November 26. The Citrograph, first published in July 1887, called it "a red-letter day in the annals of Redlands." Sources Wikipedia: Redlands, California
