Discover Chandler

In 1891 Alexander J. Chandler, a Canadian and the first veterinary surgeon in Arizona Territory, settled on a ranch south of Mesa and studied irrigation engineering. By 1900 he owned 18,000 acres, and he drew up plans for a town on what was known as the Chandler Ranch. The townsite office opened on May 16, 1912, on a site bounded by Galveston Street, Frye Road, Hartford Street and Hamilton Street. By 1913 the town center had the Hotel San Marcos, with the first grass golf course in Arizona, and Chandler High School opened in 1914. After 186 residents petitioned, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors incorporated Chandler on February 16, 1920.

More about Chandler

The town's economy held up through most of the Great Depression, though plans for a second San Marcos hotel were dropped. The cotton crash a few years later hit harder, and Chandler lost his hotel to creditors. Williams Air Force Base opened in 1941 and brought some growth, but Chandler still had only about 3,800 people in 1950. By 1980 the population was 30,000, and since then the city has grown with the Phoenix area, as homes and businesses replaced farmland. Manufacturing plants for Microchip, Motorola and Intel drove much of that growth. Sources Wikipedia: Chandler, Arizona
