Discover Peoria

Peoria lies in the Salt River Valley and reaches into the foothills to the north. William John Murphy, who had worked on the Arizona Canal, recruited settlers, many of them from Peoria, Illinois. Albert J. and Elizabeth Straw became the first residents in November 1886, followed by the Hanna, Copes and McMillan families, all from Peoria. An old desert road to the Hassayampa River near Wickenburg was the only major route until 1887, when Grand Avenue was laid out at an angle through the new townsites of Alhambra, Glendale and Peoria, becoming the main road from Phoenix to the Vulture Mine.

More about Peoria

Peoria received a post office on August 4, 1888, serving 27 people. The county set up School District Eleven, covering 49 square miles, and classes met in an empty brick store on Washington Street until the first schoolhouse, a one-room building, was finished in 1891. The settlers filed the plat with the Maricopa County recorder on May 24, 1897, naming the town after their hometown. The plat's east-west streets were named for presidents, and its north-south streets were Almond, Peach, Orange, Vine and Walnut, now 85th through 81st avenues. Between 1891 and 1895 a spur of the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway was built through Peoria. Its small depot on 83rd Avenue was bought by Scottsdale in 1972 and moved to McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. Sources Wikipedia: Peoria, Arizona
