Prescott Valley's Fitzmaurice Ruins hold artifacts of the early Mountain Patayan people who lived in the area some 1,400 years ago. The Walker Party found gold along Lynx Creek in 1863, and the Lynx Creek placers produced a recorded 29,000 ounces of gold, with estimates of actual output as high as 80,000 ounces. The area, then called Lonesome Valley, was settled by ranchers in the 1880s who raised beef for the miners and settlers, and the pioneer Fain family still ranches there.
Thomas Gibson Barlow-Massicks came in the early 1890s, ran a hydraulic gold mining operation in Lynx Creek Canyon and built a Victorian house known as the castle, in today's Fain Park, along with the company mining camp of Massicks just to the east; he died of an accidental gunshot in April 1899 at 37. In the 1930s a gold dredging operation called the Doodle Bug Diggings worked farther east in the canyon. In the mid-1960s Prescott Valley Incorporated, a Phoenix real estate company, bought land in Lonesome Valley about 10 miles east of Prescott and in 1966 began selling home lots to buyers in the Midwest. By 1978 more than 1,500 people lived in the area, and that year 80 percent of voters approved incorporating as a town. In 1985 it gained what was described as the country's first solar-powered FM radio station. Sources Wikipedia: Prescott Valley, Arizona
