Discover Prescott

Prescott was first home to the Yavapai, who had split from Patayan groups around 1300 AD. The first recorded European contact with them was made in 1583 by the Spaniard Antonio de Espejo, who was looking for gold, but there was no permanent European presence until the 1860s. The Walker Party explored the area in 1862 and 1863 and found gold on Hassayampa Creek, just south of Prescott, in 1863, and more was struck at Lynx Creek, Weaver Creek and Big Bug. With the backing of Ohio railroad men, the Arizona Organic Act created Arizona Territory in February 1863, and Fort Whipple was built that year near present Chino Valley and made the territorial capital.

More about Prescott

The next year the fort moved about 20 miles south into the mountains. Governor John Noble Goodwin, who replaced Lincoln's first appointee, John A. Gurley, after Gurley died before taking office, chose a site on the east side of Granite Creek near several mining camps. Downtown streets are named for both men. At a public meeting on May 30, 1864, the town was named for the historian William H. Prescott. Robert W. Groom surveyed it, 73 lots sold at auction on June 4, 1864, and by July 4, 232 had sold. Prescott was incorporated in 1881. The area's gold and silver made Prescott the most important town in northern Arizona, but it also intensified the Indian wars, as settlers and Native people attacked one another in increasingly bloody reprisals. The Maricopa and O'odham fought alongside American and Mexican settlers against the Yavapai and Apache, and the Hualapai War broke out in 1865. Sources Wikipedia: Prescott, Arizona
