Mount Vernon grew up beside a frontier fort. In 1799 the federal government built Fort Stoddert on the Mobile River in northern Mobile County to guard the nation's southern border, and the settlement that became Mount Vernon took shape nearby. About six miles south of town, east of U.S. Highway 43, stands Ellicott's Stone, an old surveyor's land marker.
Andrew Jackson, after a visit in 1814, ordered an arsenal built here. Congress authorized the Mount Vernon Arsenal in 1828 and construction began in 1830. Its most famous chapter came in 1887, when the Apache leader Geronimo and about 450 other Apaches, captured in the wars in the West, were held at the post as prisoners. They remained until 1894, when they were transferred to Oklahoma. The barracks were decommissioned in 1895 and given to the State of Alabama, which reopened them as Searcy Hospital, a mental hospital for African American patients. The hospital was desegregated in 1969 and closed in October 2012. Mount Vernon itself was incorporated as a town in 1959.
