Saraland began on a Spanish land grant north of Mobile. The land was granted to Don Diego Alvarez, and the community's first name, Alvarez Station, came from his descendants; it was later called Cleveland Station. Squatters had settled the area as early as 1800.
The present name reportedly came from a retired minister who opened the first post office on the Southern Railway line in 1895 and named the town for his wife. Wikipedia identifies him as C. J. DeWitt, a minister and editor who had moved south in 1890 for his health, and his wife as Sara, though these details are uncited. Saraland stayed a small railroad community until the mid-20th century, when Mobile's growing population began spilling into nearby towns. It was incorporated in 1957 with just 125 residents, and annexations had raised its population to 4,595 by the 1960 census. Just east of town, on September 22, 1993, an Amtrak Sunset Limited train plunged off a bridge damaged by a barge at Big Bayou Canot, killing 47 people, the deadliest train wreck in Amtrak's history. In 2008 Saraland opened its own city school system, separate from the Mobile County schools.
