Semmes, in western Mobile County, was named around 1850 for Raphael Semmes (1809–1877), according to a Mobile County bicentennial marker. Semmes served in the U.S. Navy from 1826 to 1861 and then in the Confederate States Navy from 1861 to 1865; the marker calls him "a hero of the South." The community has also been called the "nursery capital of the world" for its plant nurseries.
Semmes is home to what is described as Alabama's oldest school in continuous use. The one-room Semmes School was built in 1902 on land donated by Thomas Jefferson Howell. When the Mobile County School Board planned to tear the building down in 1994, volunteers formed Alumni & Friends of Semmes School, Inc.; the board granted them a 99-year lease, the school was moved back to its original site and placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, and by 1998 it had been restored to its 1902 appearance. It now stands in Semmes Heritage Park. For most of its history Semmes was unincorporated. Supporters of a city government presented a petition to the Mobile County probate judge on March 3, 2010, and voters approved incorporation in a referendum on August 17, 2010, with about 74 percent in favor. Semmes was declared incorporated on May 2, 2011, and its first city council took office on June 6, 2011.
