Satsuma is named for a fruit. The community north of Mobile was first known as Fig Tree Island. Satsuma mandarin oranges, from Japan, had been grown successfully in Alabama since 1878, and in the early 20th century satsuma orchards spread across the area. In 1915, as the satsuma-growing industry boomed, the town took the fruit's name.
The boom did not last. By 1924 the satsuma industry had collapsed. The Encyclopedia of Alabama ties the collapse to the cutting of the longleaf pine forests north of town, which had sheltered the groves from cold northern winds; Wikipedia's account also mentions cold weather and citrus canker between 1912 and 1924. Satsuma grew instead as a residential community within reach of Mobile, along U.S. Highway 43 and later Interstate 65. It was incorporated as a city in 1959, and in 2012 it separated from the Mobile County school system to run its own schools.
