Bayou La Batre is named for a French cannon battery. The bayou was first called Rivière d'Erbane, and after the French placed a battery of cannons on its west bank it became Rivière la Batterie, "river of the battery," and eventually Bayou La Batre. The town grew on a 1,259-acre land grant that the Spanish government gave in 1786 to Joseph Bosarge (also spelled Bousage or Bouzage), a French settler born in Poitiers who had come to the Gulf Coast around 1760. In 1811 the area became part of the Mississippi Territory of the United States.
By the early 1900s Bayou La Batre also drew tourists, until a 1906 hurricane devastated the town and ended its resort trade. Its economy recovered in the mid-1920s around seafood, which remains its mainstay, along with shipbuilding; the local chamber of commerce calls it the "Seafood Capital of Alabama." Bayou La Batre was incorporated in 1955. Today Vietnamese, Laotian and Cambodian immigrants are an important part of its fishing industry. The town became widely known in 1994 as the hometown of the character Bubba in the film Forrest Gump, and the ship Black Pearl from the Pirates of the Caribbean films was built in a local shipyard. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the fishing fleet, pushing more than 23 shrimp boats and the cargo ship Caribbean Clipper ashore.
