Dauphin Island, at the mouth of Mobile Bay, was first named for what the French found there. In 1699 the explorers Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and his younger brother Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville called it Île du Massacre, Massacre Island, after discovering about 60 human skeletons in mounds. Native Americans had long used the island; a large shell mound built from discarded shellfish and fish remains dates from about 1100 to 1550 CE. In the early 1700s the island served as a transfer point for the young French colony as its seat moved from Fort Maurepas to Mobile, and in 1704 the ship Pelican landed 23 young women, the "Pelican Girls," here on their way to the colony. Around 1711, though sources differ on the year, the French renamed it Île Dauphine in honor of Princess Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy; the final "e" was later dropped.
In 1821 the United States began building Fort Gaines on the island's eastern point, named for General Edmund P. Gaines, and it was still unfinished when the Civil War began. On August 5, 1864, Admiral David Farragut's Union fleet steamed past Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan in the Battle of Mobile Bay, and Colonel Charles D. Anderson surrendered Fort Gaines on August 8, 1864. The fort was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1976. A bridge to the mainland, completed by 1955, opened the island to tourism. Hurricane Frederic destroyed the bridge in 1979 and devastated much of the island; the bridge reopened in 1982, and the Town of Dauphin Island was incorporated in 1988.
