Alabaster, in Shelby County south of Birmingham, is named for its high-calcium limestone and the lime industry built on it. Joseph E. Walker opened the first store in 1925, and in 1929 George L. Scott Sr. established the Alabaster lime plant; its railroad shipping point was known as "Scott Rock," and housing was built for some of the workers. By 1933 the village was called "Alabaster-on-the-Highway."
Alabaster was served by the Siluria post office until its own opened in November 1951, and the First Bank of Alabaster opened in 1952 with George L. Scott Jr. as president. A first try at incorporation failed in 1952, but a second petition succeeded, and on February 23, 1953, Alabaster was incorporated by a vote of 79 to 23, with 427 residents; Scott became its first mayor. The Alabaster Water and Gas Board was formed in 1955, and Shelby Memorial Hospital, the first hospital in Shelby County, opened in 1959. In 1971 Alabaster merged with neighboring Siluria, a cotton mill town incorporated in 1954.
