Wilsonville, near Lay Lake in southeastern Shelby County, is named for an early settler named Wilson, though sources differ on his first name: Wikipedia says Elisha Wilson, while the town's marker says Adam Wilson. It was a major stop on the old stagecoach route from Montgomery to Huntsville and gained importance in the late 1800s with the Southern Railway.
In 1863 Confederate troops under Major W. T. Walthall, commander of the post at Talladega, built three forts nearby to guard the Alabama and Tennessee River Railroad trestles over the Coosa River and Yellow Leaf Creek. In the war's last months they were held by reserve companies of boys and old men, and Barbiere's Reserve Cavalry was stationed there in February 1865. Union troops under General James H. Wilson captured the forts in March 1865. The town was incorporated in 1897, and in 1900, with 1,095 people, it was the largest community in Shelby County, 20 more than the county seat of Columbiana. Around then it was the trading point for two farming areas known as "Four Mile" and "The Kingdom," and J. F. Pope ran the largest store in the county here. Jobs at the E. C. Gaston Steam Plant and new lakefront homes later brought growth.
