Siluria, now a neighborhood of Alabaster, is named for the Silurian geological period, for the rocks found there. A post office opened in 1872 and operated until 1972. That year, 1872, three of Alabama's four lime works were in Shelby County, among them the Siluria Lime Works.
The Siluria Cotton Mills, founded by T. C. Thompson, began operating in 1896 with a company-built mill village, and before it closed in May 1979 it was the county's largest single employer. In 1921 Thompson High School was built, the second consolidated school in Shelby County. Siluria was incorporated as a town on May 25, 1954, and after voting to merge, it was annexed by Alabaster in May 1971.
