Montgomery, Alabama's capital, stands on the Alabama River where the Alibamu towns of Ikanatchati, "red earth," and Towassa once stood; Hernando de Soto's expedition passed through in 1540. Scots trader James McQueen settled in the area in 1716, and in 1785 Abraham Mordecai, a war veteran from a Sephardic Jewish family of Philadelphia, opened a trading post and brought the first cotton gin to Alabama. After the Creek War the Creeks ceded millions of acres, Montgomery County was organized in 1816, and settlers led by General John Scott founded Alabama Town, while Andrew Dexter Jr. founded New Philadelphia and set aside "Goat Hill" for a future capitol. The rival towns merged on December 3, 1819, as Montgomery, named for Revolutionary War general Richard Montgomery.
More about Montgomery
Cotton and the slave trade made the city grow; Court Square held one of the largest slave markets in the South. Montgomery became the county seat in 1822 and the state capital on January 28, 1846. Beginning February 4, 1861, delegates met here to form the Confederate States of America, and Jefferson Davis was inaugurated on the steps of the State Capitol before the capital moved to Richmond that year. Union General James H. Wilson captured the city on April 12, 1865. In 1886 Montgomery became the first U.S. city with a citywide electric streetcar system, the "Lightning Route."
Montgomery became a birthplace of the modern civil rights movement. After Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat, Black residents boycotted the city buses from December 5, 1955, until December 20, 1956, when the Supreme Court's ruling against bus segregation took effect. In 1965 the Selma to Montgomery march ended at the Capitol, and the city is now home to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice.
