Mount Meigs, also known in the past as Evansville or Mount Pleasant, is an unincorporated community in eastern Montgomery County. In 1880 it had three churches, two schools, "one white and one colored," and daily mail. From the mid-1800s until 1940 its main export was lumber, shipped from Cook Station and Mount Meigs Station, and during World War II the stations switched to hauling gravel.
In 1893 Georgia Washington, born into slavery in Virginia on November 23, 1851, and recruited by Booker T. Washington after they met at Hampton Institute, founded the People's Village School for Black students at Mount Meigs; enrollment grew from four to 100 in its first year. She retired in 1936 after 43 years, a new building named Georgia Washington School was dedicated in February 1950, and she died on October 5, 1952, and is buried on the school grounds. Mount Meigs is also home to state institutions. The Alabama Industrial School opened here in 1911 as a reform school for Black youths and is now the Mount Meigs Campus of the Alabama Department of Youth Services, and the state's Kilby Correctional Facility serves as the receiving center for all male state inmates.
