Coosada stands on the site of Koasati, a village of the Coushatta people that thrived in the 18th and early 19th centuries. During and after the American Revolution, many Chickamauga Cherokee followers of Dragging Canoe moved to the town at the Coushattas' invitation. Coosada was the birthplace of William Weatherford, the Creek leader who led the Red Stick uprising of 1813 and 1814; after the war the Native population was forced west.
American frontiersmen quickly settled the area. William Wyatt Bibb, a land speculator from Georgia and a future governor of Alabama, bought the land where Koasati stood and divided it into lots for sale, and by 1818 the town had a post office and a sawmill. After a railroad depot opened in 1872 the settlement was known as Coosada Station; its spelling changed when the maker of the depot sign left out the "w" in Coosawda. Around 1890 the town became simply Coosada. Sources Wikipedia: Coosada, Alabama The Historical Marker Database: William Wyatt Bibb
