Pike Road, east of Montgomery, was founded in 1815 in the plantation country of eastern Montgomery County. Chantilly Plantation was bought at public auction in 1832 by Dr. Thomas Burge Taylor of Columbia, South Carolina, as a wedding gift for his bride, Harriott Pinkney Raoul, who named it for Chantilly, France, enlarged the house and landscaped the grounds; it has passed down through eight generations of his heirs.
On November 11, 1918, Pike Road School opened as Montgomery County's first school to consolidate one-room rural schoolhouses into grades one through twelve. Built for $40,000 on 30 acres with money loaned and donated by families of the surrounding settlements, it was praised by the U.S. Commissioner of Education when it was shown at the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and educators from Europe and South America came to study it. Its last senior class graduated in 1945, and it closed as a junior high in May 1970. Pike Road was incorporated as a town in 1997 and has since grown rapidly as part of the Montgomery metropolitan area.
