Discover Auburn University

Auburn University began as the East Alabama Male College, chartered by the Alabama Legislature on February 1, 1856, under the guidance of the Methodist Church. Its first president was the Reverend William J. Sasnett, and it opened in 1859 with 80 students and 10 faculty. During the Civil War most students and faculty left to enlist, the campus became a Confederate training ground, and its main building, Old Main, served as a hospital for Confederate wounded. The school reopened in 1866, the only closure in its history.

More about Auburn University

In 1872 the Methodist Church handed the college to the state, which placed it under the Morrill Act as a land-grant school, renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. Most students in the late 19th century were cadets training to become military officers. In 1892 the college admitted women, becoming the oldest four-year coeducational school in Alabama, and played its first football. Largely through the influence of William Leroy Broun, it was renamed Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899. On October 1, 1918, 878 students joined the Army as the Student Army Training Corps on campus. The name Auburn, long used informally, was made official by the legislature in 1960. The university enrolled its first African American student in 1964, under President Ralph Brown Draughon.
