Discover Notasulga

Notasulga, on the line between Macon and Lee counties, takes its name from the Creek words noti sulgi, "many teeth." During the Civil War, Camp Watts, named for Thomas H. Watts, served here as a military hospital, a camp of conscription and instruction, a supply depot and a cemetery. The conscription camp closed after the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, but the hospital stayed open, run by volunteers under Juliet Opie Hopkins, who relied on Ladies Aid Societies across Alabama and her own money.

The author Zora Neale Hurston was born in Notasulga on January 7, 1891. Her parents, John Hurston and Lucy Potts, had met at the Macedonia Baptist Church here before moving to Eatonville, Florida, where she grew up, and her first novel, Jonah's Gourd Vine (1934), is set partly in Notasulga. Her masterpiece, Their Eyes Were Watching God, followed in 1937. Notasulga was incorporated in 1893. In 1897 the town built one of the first upright railroad water tanks in the country to supply passing steam engines; the depot burned in 1958 and the tank was torn down in 1959.
