Discover Reston

In colonial times the land that is now Reston was part of the Northern Neck Proprietary, a vast grant from King Charles II that passed to Lord Thomas Fairfax and stretched from the Potomac to the Rappahannock, and the Fairfax family held it until 1852. In 1886 Carl A. Wiehle and William Dunn bought 6,449 acres in northern Fairfax County along the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad and divided it, Wiehle keeping the land north of the tracks. He planned a town with a hotel, parks and a community center but finished only a few homes before his death in 1901. The land changed hands several times before the A. Smith Bowman family bought it and built a bourbon distillery, and by 1947 the Bowmans had added the Dunn tract, for more than 7,000 acres.

More about Reston

In 1961 Robert E. Simon used money from his family's sale of Carnegie Hall to buy most of the land, except 60 acres where the Bowman distillery ran until 1987. Simon officially launched Reston on April 10, 1964, his 50th birthday, and named it from his initials, R.E.S. He set out seven guiding principles meant to let residents live, work and play in their own community, with common grounds and scenery shared regardless of income, and the motto "Live, Work, Play." Simon planned Reston as a model of clustered or conservation development that preserved open space, landscapes and wildlife habitat, and it was the first 20th-century private community in the United States to build natural preservation explicitly into its planning. He hired the architects Whittlesey, Conklin and Rossant to design it. Sources Wikipedia: Reston, Virginia
