Discover Chantilly

In the 1700s Chantilly was home to several colonial plantations, including Sully, built by Richard Bland Lee I and now the Sully Historic Site, George Richard Lee Turberville's Leeton Grove, once more than 5,000 acres, whose main house still stands on Walney Road, the John Hutchison Farm and the Chantilly Plantation. The village grew in the 19th century, especially after the Little River Turnpike to Winchester was built.

More about Chantilly

On September 1, 1862, the Battle of Chantilly, or Ox Hill, was fought nearby. After his victory at Second Bull Run, Robert E. Lee sent Stonewall Jackson around the Union position at Centreville, and Jackson reached the Little River Turnpike and turned toward Fairfax Court House to strike the rear of John Pope's army. As Pope withdrew, Jackson clashed late in the day near Ox Hill with Union forces under Isaac Stevens and Philip Kearny, and both Union generals were killed in fighting amid a raging storm that ended at dusk. Federal troops burned the Chantilly Plantation manor house during the war. One stone building survives across Route 50 from the Greenbriar Shopping Center, probably an overseer's quarters before the war and a tavern or boarding house afterward, and Cornelia Stuart, deep in debt, sold the 1,064-acre Chantilly estate after the war. Chantilly's growth into an outer suburb of Washington gained momentum after 1980, as developers built subdivisions and commercial areas on the farmland south of Dulles Airport.
