A saw and grist mill owned by James Keene was built near present Springfield between 1796 and 1800 and gave its name to Old Keene Mill Road. It served local farms for about sixty years, until William H. Keene was convicted and imprisoned for the 1855 murder of Lewis Quincy Hall, and only two millraces remain.

More about Springfield

Springfield was founded in 1847 around Daingerfield Station on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, now the Backlick Road station of the Virginia Railway Express. It was named for Springfield Farm, owned by Henry Daingerfield, an Alexandria businessman on the railroad's board. A Springfield post office was built sometime after 1851. The area saw a skirmish on October 3, 1861, and a Confederate raid on August 3, 1863, and the station served as the post office from 1866 to 1868. In 1877 Richard Moore opened a post office he called Moor, a little over a mile south near today's Old Keene Mill and Backlick roads, and in 1881 it was renamed Garfield in honor of the assassinated President James A. Garfield. The Garfield office closed in 1907, and a new one called Corbett, for the landowner, opened at the station. The name Springfield was restored for good on June 27, 1910, although Garfield continued to appear on maps for some time. Sources Wikipedia: Springfield, Virginia
