Discover Fairfax

The city and county of Fairfax are named for Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, who in the 18th century held the Northern Neck Proprietary, more than five million acres between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers. The Manahoac and Piscataway once lived in the area, which was settled in the early 18th century by farmers from Virginia's Tidewater. The legislature established the town of Providence on the site in 1805, and it grew around the county courthouse as the seat and local market of Fairfax County.

More about Fairfax

On June 1, 1861, a Union scouting party clashed with local militia in the Battle of Fairfax Court House, the first land battle of the Civil War, which ended indecisively. A second fight there on June 27, 1863, a Union defeat, delayed the Confederate cavalry commander Jeb Stuart, with serious consequences for Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg a few days later. Wikipedia gives two dates for the name change. It says in one place that the town was renamed Fairfax in 1874 and in another that it was renamed the Town of Fairfax in 1859 and incorporated as a town in 1874. A trolley line linked Fairfax to Washington, D.C., in 1904. Fairfax became a city by court order in 1961 and, under Virginia law, is separate from Fairfax County, though it remains the county seat.
